“Simple Not Easy” Weekly Newsletter. Grateful Warrior Yoga Foundation

Almost everyone is interested in improving their health in some way. Weight loss, improving strength, and expanding functional mobility are typical goals in our modern society.

Globally, humans invest millions of dollars each year in online services, equipment, trainers, and a variety of specialized products that promise shortcuts to achieving these typical wellness goals.

Oddly enough not only are shortcuts for wellness impossible, but the work and effort necessary to create change are already very simple; so shortcuts are also unnecessary.

I don’t think we are truly seeking shortcuts anyway. I think we are just verbalizing our desire for a comfortable way of getting to our goals as a shortcut.

The truth, discomfort is a part of change and is necessary for growth. There is no way to remain comfortable and create significant positive results.

The great news is that we all have extensive experience with the discomforts, persistence, and commitment required to grow, learn, and change because we have been doing it our entire lives!

Learning to walk, going to school, becoming a working adult, marriage, children, loss, success, and aging are just a few examples of life challenges that force us to grow and although some experiences are far more joyful and desirable than others; getting to that joy requires some degree of discomfort.

This is why is it essential to meet yourself where you are and deliberately focus your efforts. Investing deliberately focused consistent effort is the quickest and most efficient pathway to reaching your goals.

When you allow yourself to embrace the struggles and discomforts you encounter rather than fighting or avoiding the challenging experiences; you become empowered to influence how you experience all growth-related discomforts.

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

MEET LYDIA!

Lydia practices and teaches yoga for what yoga teaches her about life in return. Yoga reminds her of the resiliency and the strength that the body holds, as well as the body’s need for rest. Her favorite pose is Parsva Savasana, or the fetal position usually performed after Savasana, because of its reminder that each day can be approached anew and that each of us can offer ourselves and each other unlimited grace.

In addition to practicing and teaching yoga, Lydia is a justice advocate, a writer, a researcher, and an all-around fitness-lover. She has dedicated her life to amplifying the voices of those who don’t always have the resources to fight for themselves. Her non-profit organization, The Chloe Project, fulfills this mission with elementary-age students in North Carolina. A native of Johnston County, Lydia is passionate about seeing her home state grow into a diverse and inclusive community, and she sees her role as a yoga teacher as one of the avenues through which to achieve this goal. Satya, or the ethical principle of Truthfulness in yoga, guides Lydia in her passion for justice and reminds her to continuously evaluate herself and her beliefs so that she remains authentically dedicated to the people she serves.

From Lydia, you can expect an equally fiery and calming class with a focus on moving with your breath. While you can expect to be challenged, you will also be encouraged to move in a way that is unique to your body and no one else’s. Lydia hopes that you will leave her class feeling rejuvenated and rested so that you can attack your day with a renewed and positive perspective.
